Pennsylvania Lions in District 14-T (USA) teamed up with LCIF and two medical centers in October 2003 to screen for diabetic retinopathy, a diabetes-related condition that can lead to blindness. LCIF provided a US$77,347 grant to establish an eye screening program for diabetic patients in a rural, four-county area.
Diabetes is expected to grow rapidly in developed countries because of an increase in obesity, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and aging of the population. The Core 4 grant for Pennsylvania Lions is preventing blindness for many.
