Lions in Alaska have been collecting eyeglasses for several years.  In 2004, they began their fully operational Lions eyeglass recycling center.  Recently the North Pole Lions purchased the new building where the Aurora Borealis Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center is located.  The center is sponsored by Multiple District 49 (Districts 49-A and 49-B).

Volunteers at the center annually process 30,000 pairs of used eyeglasses and provide them for trained eyeglass mission teams worldwide.  In 2006-07, Lions glasses were distributed to needy people in El Salvador, Mexico, Thailand, and Micro Indonesia. 

All type of glasses are accepted and processed.  In addition, the center also welcomes used hearing aids, which they ship to the Northwest Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation in Washington State.
